Are you aware of your breathing?
Usually we are not aware of our breathing, yet we are always doing it. This happens because breathing has a very special characteristic: it can be either regulated involuntarily or voluntarily, providing a way of consciously managing processes usually of an unconscious nature. The significance and importance of breathing has been explored since ancient times. Traditions such as Yoga and Chi Kung preserve many teachings about breathing. Today’s integrative medicine also gives a special place to breath work. During the present workshop, along side with a theoretical introduction about the importance of breathing, its medical understanding, the presenter will propose practical and simple exercises to the participants in order to increase their awareness of the breathing process and to teach them ways of modulating and changing their breath. Examples of clinical applications will also be given such as how to use breathing exercises to control anxiety, to produce relaxation or stimulation and so on.
Educational Objectives:
I. To be able to explain how breathing can be used to control the autonomic nervous system;
To learn at least two practical breathing exercises that can be used in day-to-day situations.
This workshop is going to take place next in Lisboa.

A Compass the Guide Us Within the Diversity of Psychotherapy Models
In recent decades psychotherapy has gone through important developments and, in part by the influence of post-modern times, has been fragmented to the point that today there are more than 400 different models of psychotherapy catalogued. With so many models to navigate within, it becomes essential to have a compass to guide us. The aim of this workshop is to provide a simple instrument that can help psychotherapists to understand different models (old and new) and also present a standpoint of comparison between different approaches. This tool comes in the form of a useful scheme that sees any structured psychotherapy model within several levels: metaphysical, theoretical, technical and practical. During this course some models are going to be presented using this scheme (e.g., psychoanalysis, client-centre therapy, behavioral therapy, cognitive therapy and systemic brief therapy). Examples will be given of how to apply this scheme to a model that the therapist became recently acquainted with, and some time will be dedicated to reflect on the model that each one of us uses in our clinical work.
Educational Objectives:
I. To be able to summarize a therapeutic model using the scheme presented.
II. To reflect on the model that each one of us uses in our clinical work.
